Contraception

Introduction

Contraception is there to help prevent pregnancy. There are lots of different methods of contraception and they are all free from our service.

There are two main ways that contraception works:

  • Hormonal methods; like the pill; which work by releasing hormones in the body. These hormones usually stop the eggs from being released from the ovaries; prevent sperm from reaching an egg or stop the egg from getting attached to the womb.

  • Barrier methods; like using a condom; which work by stopping the sperm from reaching the egg.
The pages in this section will provide more detailed information.

It is important to remember that the only contraceptive method that protects against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is condoms.

Be sure that you always use condoms to protect yourself and your partner.
