If you have had unprotected sex (without a condom) in the last 2 weeks, the test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea may not detect the infection if you have it. We would suggest that you wait for 2 weeks from your last unprotected sex to take a test.
The test for HIV may not detect the infection until around 4 weeks after transmission and the test for syphilis may not detect the infection until around 12 weeks after transmission. We would suggest that you repeat the tests for HIV and Syphilis 12 weeks after your last unprotected sex if you are concerned.
In the meantime you should use condoms, you can access free condoms from our clinics or by joining the C Card Scheme .

If you are not using any other form of contraception you may be at risk of pregnancy. Emergency contraception can be used to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy. If the unprotected sex was up to 72 hours ago, emergency contraception pills can be accessed from pharmacies, your GP and Sexual Health Services. If the unprotected sex was up to 120 hours ago, you can access emergency contraception pills from your GP or sexual health services, or you could have an IUD (coil) fitted in sexual health services and some GPs.
To discuss emergency contraception from Sexual Health West Sussex you can book an appointment or attend one of our ‘wait to be seen’ clinics. Click here for more information or phone 0845 111 3456.
